About the Book
In an alternate 1940s Japan where reality itself has been torn open, one man's quest for vengeance becomes humanity's last hope for survival.
When Nazi forces emerge from a supernatural rift above Mount Fuji, bringing with them demons and corrupted technology from another timeline, Japan plunges into chaos. The ancient boundaries between worlds begin to collapse, allowing nightmarish creatures to slip through the cracks in reality.
Riku Amon, a wandering ronin carrying a mysterious black sword that drinks blood and shadow, finds himself thrust into this conflict when his village is destroyed. Haunted by his family's massacre and driven by a legacy he barely understands, Riku reluctantly accepts his role as the last Guardian of Boundaries—a bloodline tasked with maintaining the separation between worlds.
As he journeys toward Kyoto with unexpected allies—a shrine maiden with forbidden knowledge, a child with second sight, and a sister he thought long dead—Riku discovers that his blade, Kurokami, is slowly transforming him. The changes grant him power to face the invaders but threaten his humanity with each use.
Opposing Riku is Commander Wilhelm Kruger, a Nazi scientist wielding Die Glocke, a bell-shaped device that tears holes between realities. Kruger's unholy alliance with Onimaru, a Japanese demon with ancient ties to the Amon clan, threatens to permanently shatter the boundaries between worlds. As Kruger establishes a network of corrupted technology across Japan, he finds a new ally in Kunitsugami's Rejected Shadow—an entity cast out during Japan's creation that hungers for return.
When the newly-formed Boundary Protection Division uncovers Kruger's plan to use Japan's spiritual landscape as a weapon, Riku must embrace his transformation fully. The ancient Heart of Amaterasu may be their only hope of sealing the rift, but its power comes with a devastating price.
In a race against collapsing realities, Riku will confront enemies from across dimensions and within his own transforming body. The boundaries between human and guardian, between preservation and destruction, blur as Japan's spiritual fate hangs in the balance.
A dark fantasy epic that blends Japanese mythology with cosmic horror and alternate history, "Ashes of the Rift" explores how far one warrior will go to protect a world that exists at the borders of others.

• April 15, 2025This book blends cosmic horror with Japanese mythology in ways I've never seen before. The historical setting feels meticulously researched, and the characters are compelling. Riku's inner struggle with his transformation adds real depth to the typical hero's journey.

• April 10, 2025I couldn't put this down! The author creates such a vivid world where the supernatural and historical elements mesh perfectly. The pacing is excellent - plenty of action but with enough quieter moments to let the story breathe.

• April 8, 2025A fascinating take on alternate history with supernatural elements. The character development is strong, especially for Riku and his sister. Some of the later battle scenes got a bit complex to follow, but overall an excellent read.
